Playing Cell Phone At Rail Crossing, Student Killed By Train

JAKARTA - A student with the initials D was killed by a freight train while playing with a cell phone at the East Peninggaran railway crossing, Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta.

"He was playing on his cell phone with his friends. His friends had gone home. He was still sitting there (the train tracks) sitting on his own," said Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Kebayoran Lama Police, Iptu Sudarto, quoted by Antara, Monday, June 7.

The incident occurred at around 01.30 WIB, Monday morning at a railroad crossing in RT03/RW09, North Kebayoran Lama Village.

However, a few minutes later a freight train from Kebayoran Lama in the direction of Serpong drove up at the train crossing.

Based on the narrative of several witnesses, the 16-year-old victim then tried to run but his body was struck by a train and instantly died in a pathetic condition.

The victim's body was then evacuated to Fatmawati Hospital for medical treatment.

Sudarto appealed to the public, especially parents, to prohibit their children from playing around the train tracks.

"There was a late-night freight train passing by. This incident could be a concern for parents looking after their children", he said.
