BANGKALAN - Cases of COVID-19 after the Eid holiday in four districts on Madura Island, East Java have soared.

The four regions with an increase in COVID-19 cases are Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan and Sumenep regencies. It is suspected that the community lacks discipline in implementing health protocols.

The COVID-19 Task Force in each district on Madura Island reported that the total number of residents who were recorded as having confirmed COVID-19 until June 5, 2021, were 56 people in Bangkalan Regency, eight people in Sampang, three people in Pamekasan, and 25 people in Sumenep Regency.

According to the Public Relations of the Bangkalan Regency Government's COVID-19 Task Force, Agus Sugianto Zain, Bangkalan is now listed as the district with the highest number of active cases, due to the addition of new cases in the last three days.

"The sufferers are not ordinary citizens, but many of them are medical personnel. Even now, the treatment room for COVID-19 patients at the Bangkalan Hospital is no longer adequate," he said, quoted by Antara, Sunday, June 6.

Regarding this case, the Bangkalan Regency Government has also coordinated with the East Java Provincial Government to provide a referral hospital for COVID-19 patients from Bangkalan Regency who are positive for COVID-19.

Previously, as many as 18 health workers in Bangkalan Regency were confirmed positive for COVID-19, so the hospital was forced to close the IGD of the Bangkalan Hospital.

The 18 people consisted of one pharmacist, one doctor, eight nurses, two analysts, one radiographer, one room administrator, two office services, one management person, and a security guard at the hospital.

Apart from Bangkalan, an increase in active COVID-19 cases also occurred in Sampang, Pamekasan and Sumenep.

"In Sumenep there are 12 female patients, while the other 13 are male and generally are Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI)," said Public Relations of Dr. H Moh Anwar Public Hospital Sumenep, Arman Endika.

Prior to the Eid holiday, there were zero active cases of COVID-19 in four districts on Madura Island, so the East Java Provincial Government COVID-19 Task Force decided that Madura Island was included in the green zone.
