JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra), was shaken by an earthquake due to active fault activity.
Acting Head of the Regional Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BBMKG) Office for Region IV Makassar Nasrol Adil said that based on the results of the BMKG analysis, the tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 occurred at 00.56 WITA.
"The event is confirmed not to have the potential for a tsunami and does not cause damage," Nasrol Adil said when contacted in Kendari, Sunday, quoted by Antara.
He explained that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 4.01 degrees South Latitude (LS) and 121.56 degrees East Longitude (BT), or on land about eight kilometers northwest of Kolaka, with a depth of three kilometers.
"By considering the epicenter location and hypocenter depth, the earthquake that occurred is a shallow earthquake due to active Kolaka fault activity," he said.
Nasrol Adil revealed that based on the estimation of the shaking map (Shakemap) and community reports, the earthquake was felt in Latambaga and Kolaka Districts with an intensity scale of II to III MMI.
"Or the vibration is felt by some people and feels real inside the house, like there is a heavy vehicle passing by," said Nasrol Adil.
However, he said that there had been no reports of damage from the earthquake.
"Until Sunday (March 29) at 01.30 WITA, the results of BMKG monitoring have not shown any aftershocks," he explained.
Nasrol Adil also appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be verified for their truth.
"The public is expected to ensure that official information only comes from BMKG through verified official communication channels," said Nasrol Adil.
