JAKARTA - The United States (US) Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Mike Waltz, called the deadly bombing of a girls' school in southern Iran a tragic mistake that could have occurred in a military operation, without directly blaming any party.

"The United States does everything it can to avoid civilian casualties. But sometimes, of course, tragic mistakes can happen," he told ABC News, quoted by Sputnik, Monday, March 9.

When asked further about the results of the investigation conducted by The New York Times which said the US was responsible for the attack, Waltz said he would leave it to investigators to determine.

A girls' elementary school in Minab, Hormozgan province, southern Iran, was hit by a missile on the first day of the US-Israeli joint attack on Iran on February 28.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said 171 schoolgirls died in the bombing, which Tehran blamed on the US and Israel.

However, US President Donald Trump on Saturday (7/3) said based on things he saw, Trump said "it was done by Iran".
