JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump has imposed import tariffs of up to hundreds of percent on solar panel products from Indonesia, India, and Laos.

The US Department of Commerce announced a provisional tariff of 125.87 percent for Indian solar panel products. Then, countervailing duties in the range of 86 to 143 percent were imposed on Indonesian solar panels, and Laos at 81 percent.

According to the US Department of Commerce, solar panel products from the country benefit from unfair local government subsidies.

As reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, February 26, a Bloomberg report said the subsidies allowed exporters from the three countries to lower prices and compete with US producers.

The tariff is aimed at encouraging domestic solar panel production in the Uncle Sam's country.

However, the move also increases uncertainty for the industry and could lead to cost increases for both producers and consumers, according to a Bloomberg report.

India, Indonesia, and Laos contributed 57 percent of all solar panel imports to the US in the first half of 2025, with imports from India alone in 2024 reaching 792.6 million US dollars in 2024, an increase of nine times the import value in 2022.

The tariff was set following a complaint from US producers, who through their lawsuit in July accused Chinese producers of flooding the US market with cheap products produced in the three Asian countries, including Indonesia.

This triggered the US International Trade Commission to conduct an anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigation.

The import tariff value is not related to Trump's global tariff which was overturned by the US Supreme Court last week.

After the ruling, Trump again announced the imposition of new tariffs of 10 percent on all imports to the US, as well as threatening to raise the tariffs to 15 percent.
