PALEMBANG - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of South Sumatra informed that three regencies were monitored for cases of forest and land fires. BPBD deployed water-bombing helicopters because of the remote location.

Head of the Emergency Handling Division of the South Sumatra Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Ansori, said the three districts, Musi Banyuasin, Ogan Ilir and Ogan Komering Ilir, were included in 10 vulnerable areas.

"Currently, the team's vigilance in the field is being increased," he said, as quoted by Antara, Wednesday, June 2.

According to him, in general, the emergence of hot spots is still conducive. However, vigilance must be increased because the land fires that occur begin to grow as rainfall decreases entering the dry season.

Such as the land fire near the Palembang-Indralaya (Palindra) Toll Road, Talang Pangeran Ilir Village, West Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir Regency on Tuesday, June 1.

The fire scorched three hectares of peatland and took seven hours to extinguish it, even the Ogan Ilir Task Force requested the assistance of two water bomber helicopters for the extinguishing process because the location is quite far from water sources on land.

"No matter how small the fire, it must be extinguished immediately, that's the task force's commitment," he said.

Ansori added that the two helicopter units that started operating were assistance from BNPB who were on standby at SMH Palembang Air Base with one patrol aircraft unit.

"If the escalation of forest and land fires gets bigger, the need for the air fleet also needs to be increased, but we certainly don't expect forest and land fires to grow," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Analysis and Forecasting Unit for the SMB II Palembang Meteorological Station, Sinta Andayani, said that the eastern part of South Sumatra, including the three regencies, was starting to lack rainfall.

"June-July the dry season enters South Sumatra, then in August it will peak," said Sinta.
