JAKARTA - Ahead of the 2026 Chinese New Year celebration, community mobility in North Sumatra has begun to show an increase. The tradition of gathering with family to visit relatives makes the flow of vehicles on a number of major toll roads more crowded than usual.

Jasamarga Nusantara Tollroad Regional Division (JNT/Regional Nusantara) noted a spike in traffic volume (VLL) on the Belawan-Medan-Tanjung Morawa Toll Road (Belmera) and the Medan-Kualanamu-Tebing Tinggi Toll Road (MKTT) in the two days leading up to Chinese New Year.

The acting Senior General Manager of the Jasamarga Nusantara Tollroad Regional Division, Denny Chandra Irawan, said the volume of vehicles on the Belmera Toll Road on Sunday was recorded at 185,689 vehicles or increased by 7.2 percent compared to normal conditions.

"The volume of traffic at MKTT was recorded as 36,881 vehicles passing. This figure increased by 17.4 percent," said Denny Chandra Irawan in an official statement received in Medan, Sunday.

He detailed that vehicles passing through the Amplas Toll Gate to Medan City reached 45,340 units or an increase of 7.17 percent.

Denny added that vehicles leaving Medan City through the Amplas Toll Gate were recorded as many as 48,038 units or increased by 11.93 percent.

"For vehicles entering through the Kualanamu Toll Gate from Kualanamu Airport, 12,378 vehicles were recorded. Meanwhile, vehicles heading to Kualanamu Airport were 13,598 vehicles," he said.

Entering the 2026 Chinese New Year long holiday period, his party also ensured that a number of anticipation steps had been prepared to maintain the smooth flow of traffic on both toll roads.

"Jasa Marga appeals to toll road users to anticipate the trip during the 2026 Chinese New Year long holiday period well. Before entering the toll road, make sure the vehicle and the driver are in good condition, ensure the adequacy of fuel and electronic money balance and comply with signs and directions of officers in the field," he said.
