JAKARTA - The government has begun shifting waste handling to the closest level, namely the sub-district and village.

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto said the President gave instructions that the micro-scale waste processing technology that had been developed by a number of campuses would be accelerated and immediately tested this year.

"In addition to waste to energy which is still running, several micro-scale waste processing technologies are requested to be accelerated," said Brian at the Presidential Palace complex, Wednesday, February 11.

The scheme will run with Danantara and involve coordination with the Ministry of Environment. Brian emphasized that the trial will be carried out in several cities with local governments, with the target of micro units being able to handle around 10 tons of garbage per day per village/village.

The technologies discussed are still in the selection phase, ranging from gasification to plasma-assisted and cold plasma. The government will reassess to choose the "best" option, while ensuring environmental standards - because the wrong design of the technology can move new problems.

Unlike the waste to energy scheme, Brian emphasized that this micro-processing does not produce electricity and is not for sale to PLN. The output is in the form of sand or dust that can be used as a mixture of materials, such as for sidewalks or cement.

The target for acceleration is clear. "This year... it will be tested in several villages and villages," said Brian.

He hopes that this approach will reduce the mobilization of waste between regions because waste is handled at the origin, while waiting for the waste to energy project to run.
