JAKARTA - The Mayor of Bandung Muhammad Farhan said that around 10 thousand students in this city experienced mental health disorders throughout 2025 based on the results of a survey conducted by the local city health service on students from elementary school to high school.
"10,000 students experience mental health problems," said Farhan when reviewing SMP Negeri 70 Kota Bandung, Friday, quoted by Antara.
He said the findings would be the basis for the Bandung City Education Office to formulate a program to strengthen the capacity of guidance counselors (BK) in schools.
"The education service will respond to that by making a program," he said.
However, Farhan admitted that his party had not been able to detail the classification of students who had mental health disorders, both in the mild and severe categories.
On the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Wamendikdasmen), Fajar Riza Ul Haq emphasized that the central government continues to strengthen the role of guidance counselors to increase attention to the psychological condition of students.
"Because so far in school teachers are not quick to detect the problems of their children. By strengthening the role of BK teacher counseling in schools, we want teachers to be the first party who can detect children's problems," said Fajar.
He added that the problems experienced by children in the family environment were often carried to school without being detected by teachers, so strengthening the role of teacher guardians and counseling services was an important step.
In addition, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is also revitalizing the function of the School Health Unit (UKS) as a link between schools and health centers in dealing with physical and mental health problems of students.
"When children show abnormal symptoms, teachers must be able to detect them, then bring them to the UKS for consultation. If it cannot be overcome, the UKS recommends referring to a health facility," he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Bandung City Education Office, Asep Gufron, said his party plans to bring psychologists to schools to work with BK teachers and strengthen coordination with local health centers.
"We are preparing psychologists to provide guidance to BK teachers," he said.
