JAKARTA - Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump discussed bilateral relations, including the Taiwan issue, in a telephone conversation on Wednesday (4/2) evening, amid the strategic and economic dynamics of the two countries.
China's Foreign Ministry said in a written statement on Thursday, February 5, that Xi stressed that Taiwan was the most important and sensitive issue in China-US relations. "Taiwan is China's territory," the statement said.
Xi Jinping and Trump also previously communicated by telephone on November 24, 2025, about a month after their last meeting in Busan, South Korea, on October 30, 2025.
Xi stressed that China would safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity and would not allow Taiwan to be separated. He also asked the US to be prudent in handling arms sales to Taiwan.
On December 17, 2025, the US sold weapons and related equipment to Taiwan worth more than 11 billion US dollars, or around Rp183.9 trillion, which triggered strong protests from the Chinese government.
Xi assessed that the meeting in Busan succeeded in setting the direction and goal of China-US relations and was positively welcomed by the people of both countries and the international community.
"I highly value this relationship. In the new year, I hope we can guide the China-US relationship steadily through various challenges and achieve more great and good things," Xi said.
He said China also had concerns as the US, but stressed that Beijing always kept its promises so that statements and actions went hand in hand.
According to Xi, if the two countries work in the spirit of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit, the path to overcoming differences will always be open.
Xi said the two countries have a big agenda in 2026. China will start its 15th Five-Year Plan, while the US celebrates 250 years of independence.
China will host the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, while the US hosts the G20 Summit, so the two countries need to strengthen dialogue, manage differences, and expand practical cooperation.
He hopes that 2026 will be a year of gradual progress towards mutual trust, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Meanwhile, Trump in the same release stated that the US and China are major countries with the most important bilateral relations in the world.
"I have a good relationship and great respect for President Xi. Under our leadership, economic and trade cooperation is going well, and I want to see China succeed," Trump said.
Trump emphasized that the US wants to deepen cooperation and achieve more progress in bilateral relations.
He also said he understood China's stance on Taiwan and hoped that the two sides would continue to engage in dialogue and maintain stable relations during his presidency.
Previously, on January 15, 2026, the US announced a trade deal with Taiwan regarding an investment commitment of 250 billion US dollars in the US semiconductor and technology manufacturing sector, in return for a reduction in import tariffs on Taiwanese products from 20 percent to 15 percent.
In addition, Taiwan agreed to provide an additional credit guarantee of 250 billion US dollars to support small companies in the supply chain.
US Trade Minister Howard Lutnick said Washington's goal was to move 40 percent of Taiwan's chip supply and production chains to the US, given that Taiwan is the world's most advanced computer chip manufacturer.
