Road Damage in Rainy Season Often "Eat" Victims, Pramono asks Drivers to be Careful

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung responded to the increase in motor vehicle accidents due to damaged and potholed roads in the midst of heavy rainfall. He asked the public to be more vigilant when passing, especially at road points that are prone to damage during the rainy season.

Pramono admitted that the high intensity of rain in recent times has a direct impact on the condition of roads in Jakarta. A number of sections have been damaged, ranging from peeling road surfaces to holes that could potentially endanger drivers.

"The Jakarta government has repeatedly conveyed that everyone should be careful, because it must be admitted that due to the very high rainfall. Now there are indeed several places (roads) that are hollow. Yes, I hope nothing happens until it gets in and falls," said Pramono at the DKI Jakarta City Hall, Thursday, January 29.

Pramono emphasized that the DKI Provincial Government continues to strive to make improvements, even though the weather conditions make handling not entirely possible permanently. He claimed that the safety of road users remained the main concern of the local government.

Meanwhile, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Road Development Service, Heru Suwondo, explained that road damage that occurs during the rainy season is often influenced by natural factors that are difficult to avoid.

So, Heru admitted that the DKI Provincial Government did not have a special mechanism regarding the compensation or compensation scheme for drivers who were victims of being stuck in a broken road in Jakarta.

"So this is it, it's called an accident, no one wants it, there is an accident, right. Well, this can be said to be force majeure. Well, if it's force majeure, the treatment is different," said Heru.

Heru said that water is one of the main factors that accelerate asphalt damage. According to him, until now there is no asphalt material that is completely resistant to the combination of rain, puddles, and the load of vehicles that pass continuously.

"Indeed, if this asphalt is exposed to water, it does weaken the bond and it is reduced. So if there is a special asphalt or not, this is not yet there who can make asphalt that is resistant to rain, puddles, then vehicles pass through so that there is pumping," said Heru.

In the midst of extreme weather conditions, Bina Marga has recorded thousands of damaged and pothole road points in Jakarta since the beginning of 2026.

The handling is carried out gradually in accordance with the field conditions. As soon as there is a report of a damaged road, the Yellow Forces officers are immediately deployed to the location to carry out temporary repairs.

"As many as 6,000 points of damaged and potholed roads that we have handled during this rainy season are so large," said Heru.

He said that the number showed an increase in damage compared to December 2025. Because the rain is still often falling, the repairs carried out are temporary to keep the road function from being able to be passed.

Heru ensured that permanent repairs would be carried out after the weather conditions improved. The procurement process for materials for thorough repairs will also be carried out immediately.

"Later, when the weather improves, we will do it with permanent handling. If the weather is good, we will immediately e-purchase. Auctioned," he concluded.
