PEKANBARU - The Regional Disaster Management and Fire Service (BPBD Damkar) of Riau has recorded a total area of forest and land fires (karhutla) throughout this year has reached 59.38 hectares spread across 10 districts/cities in Riau Province.

Head of the BPBD Damkar Riau M Edy Afrizal said that the areas affected by the forest fire included Bengkalis Regency, Meranti Islands, Siak, Kampar, Pelalawan, Indragiri Hulu, Indragiri Hilir, Kuantan Singingi, and Dumai and Pekanbaru Cities.

"So far, 10 areas in Riau have been found to have forest fires. The total area of forest fires reached 59.38 hectares," said Edy in Pekanbaru, Antara, Thursday, January 29.

He detailed that the area of forest fires in Dumai City was recorded at around 7 hectares, Bengkalis Regency 15.01 hectares, Meranti Islands 2.70 hectares, Siak 5.30 hectares, Pekanbaru 8.43 hectares, Kampar 7.25 hectares, Pelalawan 6 hectares, Indragiri Hulu 1.30 hectares, Indragiri Hilir 5 hectares, and Kuantan Singingi 1.50 hectares.

From the area, BPBD Damkar Riau also recorded about 200 hotspots detected in a number of areas. However, Edy ensured that the current fire had been successfully handled.

"Reports from each region, karhutla in the region can be handled. Some have been completely extinguished and some are still in the cooling process," he said.

In an effort to handle the forest fire, a number of elements have been deployed, ranging from the district/city BPBD, TNI-Polri, Manggala Agni, fire-conscious people, to companies around the affected locations.

Edy added that because the Riau Province had not set the emergency alert status for karhutla, the handling of fires was still being carried out by the respective local governments.

"Although the emergency standby status has not been determined, coordination is still carried out so that the extinguishing process runs effectively," he said.
