PUBALINGGA - A total of seven climbers of Mount Slamet were successfully evacuated in a safe condition after being trapped in a landslide and flash flood that cut off the climbing route on Friday, January 23 evening. Although all climbers were safe, this disaster claimed one life from local residents and damaged hundreds of buildings at the foot of the mountain.
The seven climbers were separated at several vulnerable points; two people were stuck at Post 1, while a family of five people were forced to survive at Post 3 due to the loss of access to the road hit by landslides.
Responding to extreme weather and infrastructure damage, Purbalingga Regent Fahmi Muhammad Hanif officially ordered the temporary closure of all Mount Slamet climbing routes. The results of the review showed landslides in four strategic points that were very dangerous for safety.
"Extreme rainfall triggered landslides at four points on the mountain slopes. The material was carried into the river and caused flash floods that damaged bridges in the lower area. For safety, all climbing routes are closed completely," said Fahmi, Monday, January 26.
This disaster has a wide impact on three villages, namely Serang and Kutabawa Villages (Karangreja District), and Sangkanayu Village (Mrebet District). In addition to one person dying, the provisional data recorded significant damage:
165 houses of residents were damaged. 5 bridges connecting between areas were cut off. 12 vehicles (2 cars and 10 motorcycles) were swept away by the current.Currently, the joint volunteers and BPBD Purbalingga are still conducting data collection and material cleaning. The public is urged to increase vigilance against the potential for extreme weather following on the mountain slopes.
