JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung directly reviewed the old Kali Cakung segment of the Begog and Pedongkelan Rivers in Cilincing District, North Jakarta, Friday, January 23, 2026. The review was carried out to ensure that the flood handling steps in the northern area of Jakarta were carried out according to field needs.
Pramono assessed that Kali Cakung Lama had a significant narrowing which caused a bottleneck in the flow of water before flowing into the sea. This condition is said to be one of the causes of flooding in a number of areas, ranging from Kelapa Gading, Sukapura, Cilincing, Pegangsaan Dua, to Koja.
"I have just reviewed and checked directly, indeed in Kali Cakung Lama this bottleneck is the main cause of flooding in a number of areas," said Pramono.
Data from the DKI Jakarta Water Resources Agency (SDA) shows that the Begog River, which is part of the Old Cakung River, has experienced extreme narrowing. The effective width of the channel, which was originally about 20 meters, is now only about 2 to 3 meters.
The narrowing is exacerbated by the high sediment deposits and the presence of buildings on the river and riverbanks. This condition causes siltation and a reduction in the flow capacity, especially when water discharge increases due to rain, so it is prone to triggering puddles to flooding in the Cilincing, Kelapa Gading, and Koja areas.
Seeing this condition, Pramono ensured that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) would carry out integrated handling through the normalization of the Old Cakung River.
Currently, the North Jakarta Sub-Department of Natural Resources and Environment has dredged sediments and ordered buildings along the Sedayu segment to Simpang Lima Koja, and will continue to the Begog Village area.
"I have given direct approval for normalization, approximately along the two kilometers. Next Sunday we will immediately hold a meeting so that the implementation can immediately run," added Pramono.
In addition to normalization, the DKI Provincial Government will also carry out land acquisition in the Begog Village area to restore the function of the channel according to the planned capacity. This effort is aimed at reducing the risk of repeated flooding in the Cakung Lama river basin.
Based on the 2020-2025 flood distribution map, the Pegangsaan Dua, Kelapa Gading area has been recorded as experiencing flooding almost every year with water levels ranging from 15 to 40 centimeters.
"In terms of the DAS system, this puddle area is included in the Old Cakung DAS. The problems of the Old Cakung DAS include the high sediment deposits in the Old Cakung River which resulted in the river bank, as well as the increasingly narrow river conditions due to the occupation of residents and the many buildings on the riverbanks," he explained.
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will also increase the number of water pumps and continue to normalize in a number of other strategic rivers, such as the Krukut River and the Ciliwung River. This step is taken to strengthen the flood control system in the midst of potential extreme weather.
On the other hand, Pramono said that the DKI Provincial Government extended the Weather Modification Operation (OMC) until January 27, 2026. The operation is carried out up to three times a day, adjusted to the needs and conditions of the atmosphere.
"The weather modification operation, which was supposed to end on January 23, we extend it until January 27. This is a form of preparedness so that the flood incident does not recur," he said.
As a mitigation step for the impact of flooding and congestion, the DKI Provincial Government also implemented the School From Home (SFH) and Work From Home (WFH) policies. This policy is contained in the circular of the DKI Jakarta Education and Manpower Service, and is implemented according to the conditions of each agency and sector.
"We ask all related services to intervene, ranging from Natural Resources, Bina Marga, Transportation, Kominfotik, to BPBD. This WFH and SFH policy is to reduce traffic load and ensure community activities continue," concluded Pramono.
