KLATEN - The government has begun to change the face of Plaosan Temple. Culture Minister Fadli Zon inaugurated the Development Phase I of the cultural heritage site, in Klaten, Central Java, Wednesday (21/1/2026), with an emphasis on improving public access, visitor services, and area management.

This step marks a shift in the management of Plaosan from merely a tourist site to a well-organized cultural public space. The government targets an increase in the quality of services without sacrificing the principle of preservation.

"With the increasingly tangible landscape of Plaosan Temple, hopefully people will come not only to visit, but also to pick up the cultural values contained in it," said Fadli Zon. He emphasized that cultural heritage is not a dead object. "Cultural heritage is a physical manifestation of civilization and the history of a nation that is important for understanding identity and cultural continuity."

The development of Phase I Plaosan is supported by a public-private partnership scheme, one of which is through the support of the Djarum Foundation. Fadli assessed that cross-sector collaboration was the key to accelerating preservation. "Building culture cannot only rely on the government. The role of the private sector, philanthropy, and the cultural community is very important," he said.

Head of the Museum and Cultural Heritage Indira Estiyanti Nurjadin explained that the initial phase includes arranging the core area of the temple, the sacred room, the entrance, parking, and public spaces. The arrangement is carried out gradually and still refers to the principles of preservation. In the future, the Plaosan area will be equipped with ticketing services, driving, and controlled thematic utilization.

Klaten Regent Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo assessed that Plaosan has great potential as a cultural icon. "With the development of Plaosan Temple, I hope this can become an icon of Indonesia, even the world, because it has uniqueness that other temples do not have," said Hamenang.

The Ministry of Culture also encourages the expansion of collaboration, including the involvement of SMK students in the construction field in the restoration workshop program. The target is that Candi Plaosan not only physically arranged, but also serves as a relevant and sustainable public education space.
