JAKARTA - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi on Wednesday said his country welcomed the launch of the second phase of US President Donald Trump's peace plan for the Gaza Strip.

"I welcome the US announcement on the start of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement. This is a key step towards the implementation of the peace plan and de-escalation in the region. Thus, the chances of stability are greater," Sisi said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Wednesday, January 21.

US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced the start of the second phase of Trump's plan, which consists of 20 points, to end the war in Gaza on January 14, moving from a ceasefire to demilitarization, technocratic government, and reconstruction.

"Given its historical role in supporting the Palestinian struggle, Egypt will make every effort to engage in dialogue with all parties concerned to end the conflict in accordance with the two-state solution," Sisi said.

The approach guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the boundaries set in 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In mid-November, the UN Security Council approved a resolution proposed by the US to support Trump's comprehensive plan to resolve the conflict in Gaza.

Thirteen of the 15 council members voted in favor, while Russia and China abstained.

The US plan for Gaza proposes a temporary international administration for the territory and the formation of a peace council led by Trump, as well as the deployment of international stabilization forces.
