MAKASSAR - The joint SAR team immediately handed over the black box or black box of the ATR 42-500 aircraft with the registration number PK-THT belonging to PT Indonesia Air Transport (IAT) to the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) after it was found in the Bulusaraung mountain area, Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi.

"After it was found, the black box was immediately secured and handed over to the authorities, namely the KNKT, which is authorized to conduct further investigations in accordance with the applicable procedures," said Head of the Makassar Basarnas Office, Muhammad Arif Anwar, Wednesday, January 21.

As the SMC (SAR Mission Coordinator) Coordinator, he explained that there were two units of the black box, namely the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).

The black box, he said, is a crucial part of the aircraft accident handling process. The two were found around the fuselage by the joint SAR team during the subsequent search sector.

He explained that the FDR serves to record various flight parameters, such as altitude, speed, direction, aircraft position, to engine performance.

The data recording the activity, he said, is very important to help the authorities reconstruct the chronology of the flight before the accident occurred.

Meanwhile, the CVR records conversations in the cockpit, including crew communications and other important sounds during the flight.

"In general, the FDR and CVR devices are stored in the tail section of the aircraft. This placement is designed because the tail area is considered to have a higher level of resistance when there is a collision, so that the chances of saving data are greater," he explained.

"With the discovery of this black box, it is an important step in the aircraft accident investigation process," he added.

"The SAR team will continue to carry out its duties according to its mandate, with a focus on searching and evacuating victims and securing important objects at the scene," he emphasized.

Previously, the joint SAR team managed to find the black box behind the tail of the ATR 42-500 aircraft in the Bulusaraung mountain area, Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi.

The discovery of two units of the suspected black box of the aircraft was made after a team was formed specifically to search for the tail of the aircraft. After finding the tail of the aircraft, the joint SAR team released the position of the black box to be evacuated to the AJU SAR Post at Tompobulu, Balocci District, Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi.
