TANJUNG SELOR - North Kalimantan (Kaltara) Governor Zainal Arifin Paliwang uses an electric car as a government vehicle. This policy marks a change in the pattern of government transportation in the scope of the Kaltara Provincial Government that is more environmentally friendly.
Zainal explained that the electric vehicles used were not the result of the procurement of new assets, but through a rental scheme from a third party.
"Starting this year (2026), the North Kalimantan Provincial Government will stop procuring conventional official vehicles and switch to a rental system with priority for clean energy-based vehicles," said Governor Zainal, Tuesday, January 20.
"The use of electric vehicles in the government environment is part of support for energy transition and carbon emission reduction," he continued.
He revealed that the price of electric vehicles used by electric SUV types ranges from IDR 550 million to IDR 600 million per unit. However, the rental option is considered more flexible and efficient in managing regional budgets.
In the initial phase, new electric vehicles are used by the Governor and Deputy Governor. However, in the future, their implementation will be gradually expanded to all regional device organizations.
"God willing, the implementation will be carried out gradually. In the future, all government vehicles will use a rental scheme from a third party," he explained.
Zainal also targeted a full transition from fossil-fuel vehicles to electric vehicles could be realized in the next three to four years.
"We hope that in line with the completion of the Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) project in Kaltara, which will strengthen the supply of clean energy," he said.
In addition to being environmentally friendly, electric vehicles are also equipped with modern technology. Zainal said one of the flagship features was a voice command to operate a number of vehicle functions.
"There are many advantages. For example, just give a voice command to turn on the air conditioner, it will be active immediately without having to press a button," he said.
The North Kalimantan Provincial Government has an Electric Vehicle Charging Station (SPKL) in the government office and official residence areas. In the future, the local government will strengthen coordination with PLN to add SPKL to support electric vehicle mobility.
"With a single charge, this electric vehicle is capable of covering a distance of up to 500 kilometers," he said.
