JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) together with the local government is optimizing the housing waiting fund (DTH) assistance scheme and accelerating the construction of temporary housing (huntara) for people affected by disasters in Sumatra with a target for completion before Ramadan 2026.
"BNPB together with the local government continues to accelerate the construction of temporary housing with the main target of completion before Ramadan," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, quoted in Jakarta, Monday, quoted by Antara.
He said that of the 50,367 units of severely damaged houses, BNPB recorded that the submission of temporary housing construction had reached 27,818 units. In mid-January 2026, as many as 6,063 units were still in the construction process, while 871 units had been completed and were ready to be inhabited by affected residents.
In addition to temporary housing, Abdul Muhari revealed that the submission of permanent housing construction is also continuing. A total of 11,736 units of permanent housing have been submitted, with 648 units of which are currently in the construction phase.
Apart from related to housing, BNPB also optimizes the DTH assistance scheme to ensure that people's basic needs are still met during the transition period to permanent housing. Until mid-January 2026, DTH applications have reached 15,346 families.
Of this amount, 10,717 recipient accounts have been ready and DTH assistance has been distributed to 2,695 affected families.
Then, in order to accelerate emergency handling while minimizing the risk of subsequent disasters, BNPB also carried out a Weather Modification Operation (OMC) in a number of areas prone to wet hydrometeorological disasters in Sumatra.
Until January 17, 2026, OMC in the Aceh region has been carried out 487 sorti with a total of 465,800 kilograms of sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium oxide (CaO) seed materials. In North Sumatra, OMC was carried out 377 sorti with a total of 330,800 kilograms of seed materials, while in West Sumatra recorded 403 sorti with a total of 400,325 kilograms of seed materials.
The operation aims to control the intensity of rainfall and reduce the potential for subsequent disasters in vulnerable areas.
Abdul Muhari emphasized the commitment of BNPB to continue to strengthen coordination with related ministries and agencies, local governments, TNI, Polri, volunteers, and all elements of society so that disaster management can run effectively, measurably, and sustainably.
With solid synergy, the acceleration of the recovery of basic infrastructure, the fulfillment of decent housing, and the strengthening of disaster mitigation are expected to be able to gradually restore the lives of affected people to a safer and more resilient condition.
