JAKARTA - TNI AL personnel thwarted an attempt to smuggle 25 tons of illegal tin ore in the East Sea of the Bangka Strait, Bangka Belitung Islands on Wednesday (14/1).
The failure of the smuggling action began with the suspicion of TNI AL personnel against the activities of a fishing boat in Bangka waters.
"This failure started from the results of the detection of KRI Todak-631 which was carrying out Operation BKO Guskamla I against a ship suspected of illegal activities," said the Head of the TNI AL Information Service (Kadispenal) First Fleet Admiral Tunggul as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, January 15.
Based on the suspicion, the KRI personnel tried to monitor until they finally approached the fishing boat.
Tunggul continued, officers from the Pangkal Pinang and Binda Pangkal Pinang Customs were also involved in the raid.
TNI AL personnel also secured four crew members (ABK) and a large amount of lead in the ship.
"From the results of the examination, illegal tin ore cargo weighing approximately 25 tons or about 500 kampils was found, with an estimated economic value of IDR 12.5 billion," said Tunggul.
This lead ore, continued Tunggul, is estimated to be sent to the Malaysian region. The personnel immediately took all the nickel cargo and four ABK to the authorities to undergo the applicable legal process.
"All evidence and the perpetrators were then secured for further legal proceedings in accordance with applicable regulations," added Tunggul.
Tunggul continued, this action is a strong proof of the commitment of the Indonesian Navy in helping the government in maintaining the country's natural resources.
Tunggul ensured that the Indonesian Navy would continue to strengthen surveillance in the maritime area in order to protect the valuable assets of the state as well as maintain the sovereignty of the maritime area.
