Today's Weather: BMKG Forecasts Rain and Strong Winds in Many Cities

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning in the form of the potential for light, moderate, and heavy rain, which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in various major cities in Indonesia on Wednesday, January 7.

Praktirawan Miftah Ali explained in general terms that the convergence area extends in East Nusa Tenggara, the Banda Sea, the Arafuru Sea, South Papua, and northern Australia.

This condition is able to increase the potential for rain cloud growth along the areas that are passed by convergence or confluence.

Therefore, his party estimates that several major cities have the potential to experience moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, including the Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Pangkalpinang, Tanjung Selor and Palangka Raya, Kupang, Mamuju, Makassar, and Nabire regions.

Meanwhile, several other major cities will experience light to moderate rain, namely the Banda Aceh, Medan, Bandar Lampung, Jambi Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, Banjarmasin, Samarinda, Pontianak, Gorontalo, Manado, Kendari, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke.

Meanwhile, several other major cities are expected to only experience cloudy conditions today, including the Bengkulu, Denpasar, Mataram, Palu, and Manokwari regions.

Previously on Tuesday, the BMKG reminded fishermen to be alert to the potential for high waves in a number of waters in North Sumatra (Sumut) on January 7 to 8, 2026.

BMKG Praktirawan of the Belawan Maritime Meteorological Station, Christen Marpaung, said that a number of waters in North Sumatra were potentially hit by waves of 1.25 to 2.5 meters on January 7 to 8, 2026.

High waves are potentially occurring in the western Indian Ocean of the Nias Islands, the western waters of the Batu Islands, the waters of the Batu Islands, the western waters of the Nias Islands, and the eastern waters of the Nias Islands.

"Fishermen's boats should be alert if the wind speed reaches 15 knots and the wave height reaches 1.25 meters and the barge if the wind speed reaches 16 knots and the wave height reaches 1.5 meters," he said.
