JAKARTA - The Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, Teheran had designated the Royal Canadian Navy as a terrorist organization, in response to Ottawa's earlier decision to include Iran's IRGC (Revolutionary Guard Corps) as a terrorist entity.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the move was taken under domestic law requiring reciprocal action against countries that support or follow the IRGC's designation by the United States as a terrorist organization.
The ministry said Canada's decision violated the basic principles of international law by labeling the official branch of the Iranian Armed Forces as a terrorist group, as quoted by IRNA (31/12).
It is known that Canada severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2012. In June last year, Ottawa included the IRGC as a terrorist organization, a move that drew harsh criticism from Tehran.
The Mullah State has repeatedly rejected the designation, saying it has no legal basis and undermines international norms governing relations between states.
Along with the designation, Canada banned IRGC members from entering its territory and Canadians were banned from conducting any transactions with individual or group members, as reported by Al Arabiya from AFP.
In addition, any assets owned by the IRGC or its members in Canada can also be seized.
Canada accuses the IRGC of "consistently demonstrating a disregard for human rights both inside and outside Iran, as well as a willingness to destabilize the rules-based international order."
One of the reasons behind Ottawa's decision to designate the group as a terrorist group was the PS752 Flight incident.
The flight was shot down shortly after taking off from Tehran in January 2020, killing all 176 passengers and crew, including 85 Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
The IRGC admitted its forces shot down the jet, but claimed its controllers mistook the jet for an enemy target.
