JAKARTA - Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor on Monday announced that the country would gradually impose restrictions on WhatsApp.
Citing a statement from the Roskomnadzor press service, the RBK news agency reported that WhatsApp "continues to violate Russian law."
"In light of this, Roskomnadzor is gradually imposing restrictive measures on WhatsApp. A gradual reduction in WhatsApp calls began in August, as Roskomnadzor reported in the media," the statement said, adding that restrictions were imposed gradually to allow users to switch to other messaging applications, Anadolu reported (23/12).
Previously on Monday, around 1,600 complaints against WhatsApp were received over 24 hours, according to Sboy.rf, a Russian-based internet outage monitoring site, and Downdetector.
Users reported glitches in notifications, messaging problems, and unstable operation of its apps and websites.
Previously, WhatsApp and Telegram calls were restricted in Russia "for security and fraud prevention purposes."
In late November, Roskomnadzor warned WhatsApp it would be blocked completely if it did not comply with Russian laws.
