This Monday, ASEAN Foreign Ministers Discuss Cambodian-Thai Conflict

JAKARTA - Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEAN 2025, will hold an ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Special Meeting to discuss the latest situation regarding the Cambodian-Thai border conflict in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Monday, December 22.

The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an official statement in Kuala Lumpur, Sunday, stated that this special meeting was held based on the decision of the Prime Ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand on December 11, 2025.

The Special Meeting will be chaired by the Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato' Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan.

The meeting will provide a forum for ASEAN Foreign Ministers to exchange views on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand.

In addition, it is also to consider steps that ASEAN can take to support ongoing efforts towards de-escalation and cessation of hostilities in the interest of peace and stability between the two ASEAN member countries, as well as the wider region.

"The holding of this special meeting reflects the commitment of ASEAN member countries to ASEAN unity and solidarity, as well as ASEAN's centrality in maintaining peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the region, in accordance with the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia/TAC)," wrote the Malaysian Foreign Ministry.

As the Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia stated that it remained strongly committed to advancing constructive dialogues in the spirit of ASEAN, and in this regard, to facilitate both parties to continue to uphold the principles of international law, good neighborly relations, and peaceful coexistence, as well as bilateral and multilateral cooperation in efforts to achieve peaceful, just, and sustainable resolution of disputes.

Based on the information collected, Malaysian authorities restricted journalists' coverage of the meeting due to the sensitivity of the issues discussed.

For the time being, Malaysian authorities only allow official media owned by the Malaysian government to cover, to ensure that there is visual and factual coverage related to the meeting.
