JAKARTA - Turkey shot down an "uncontrolled" drone that approached its airspace from the Black Sea.

The incident comes after Ukraine's attack on a Russian "ghost fleet" tanker off the coast of Turkey and warnings from Turkish politicians about the dangers of a widening war in Ukraine.

F-16 fighter jets were deployed after the object was detected, the Turkish Defense Ministry said.

"To avoid potential danger, the drone was shot down in a safe area outside the populated area," he continued, as reported by ABC News, Tuesday, December 16.

The statement did not provide further details on the location or time of the incident.

Ukraine said its naval drones attacked two tankers on November 28. A third ship was attacked on December 2 while heading to the Turkish port of Sinop.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the earlier attack as a threat to "the safety of navigation, life and the environment, especially in our own exclusive zone."
