JAKARTA - Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the US dollar currency was used as a political weapon so Russia was forced to look for other means of payment.

President Vladimir Putin stressed Russia did not rule out the dollar, Lavrov said, but "it was those who cut Russia off the dollar" had "used it as a political weapon."

"Therefore, we are forced to look for alternative payment platforms and we will," Lavrov said at a meeting of the Russian Federation Council on Wednesday, December 10, quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik.

He said that in modern times, more and more countries are starting to look for alternative payments.

"The more countries start asking themselves: what may tomorrow be disliked by those who control the global financial market? Nobody knows," Lavrov said, saying seeking alternative payments has now become a trend.

Various financial and economic sanctions have been imposed by the United States and its allies on Russia due to the ongoing war in Ukraine since February 2022.

One of these sanctions is the termination of access to SWIFT's main interbank payment route in the world so that Russian banks cannot use the US dollar and euro in international transactions.
