JAKARTA - The defense agreement to provide nuclear-powered submarines for Australia is underway under President Donald Trump's Administration, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday, dismissed speculation that the deal signed under former president Joe Biden would be canceled.
AUKUS, a security partnership between Australia, Britain, and the US agreed on September 15, 2021, came under intense scrutiny after US President Donald Trump took office in January. His approval marked rare support for Biden's era policies.
"At the President's direction, AUKUS went smoothly," said Foreign Minister Rubio in a 2+2 US-Australia meeting with Defense Minister Pete Hegseth, their defense minister Penny Wong and Defense Minister Richard Marles, as reported by The National (9/12).
The AUKUS deal will allow Australia to receive a submarine fleet from the US, enabling cooperation in developing various warfare technologies.
The submarine, whose sales will begin in 2032, is at the heart of Australia's strategy to increase its long-range attack capabilities in the Pacific, especially against China.
The deal could cost Canberra up to $235 billion over the next 30 years, and also includes technology to build its own ships in the future.
Monday's meeting marked 40 years of consultation between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Defense of Australia-United States, quoted from Anadolu.
