JAKARTA - The Chinese government is responding to the United States' National Defense Strategy (NDS) which states the US does not support unilateral changes to the "state quo" in the Taiwan Strait and wants to balance the US-China economic relations.
"We are paying attention to the National Security Strategy' document issued by the US government. China believes the two countries will benefit from cooperation and bear losses from confrontation," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun at a press conference in Beijing, Monday, December 8.
The NDS, published last November, became a strategic roadmap for the US Department of Defense to implement President Donald Trump's agenda.
The document mentions the goal of defending the US as the strongest, richest, most influential and most successful country in the world in the next few decades.
In a military threat prevention strategy, the NDS insists the US will maintain a long-standing declarative policy on Taiwan, meaning it does not support unilateral changes to the state quo in the Taiwan Strait.
"Highly upholding each other, living side by side peacefully, and mutually beneficial cooperation is the right way for China and the US. China is ready to work together for a stable bilateral relationship while firmly defending its sovereignty and interests," added Guo Jiakun.
He said China hopes that the US will act according to the common understanding of the two heads of state, improve dialogue, manage differences, and encourage China-US relations to be stable, healthy, and sustainable.
"Regarding Taiwan, allow me to emphasize that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. Taiwan's problem is the main red line that should not be violated in China-US relations," said Guo Jiakun.

The Taiwan issue is an internal matter of the Chinese people and should not be interfered with by outsiders.
The US needs to adhere to the principles of One China and three joint communiques, respect the commitment of the leaders, deal with Taiwan carefully, and stop supporting the separatist movement. China will firmly defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," continued Guo Jiakun.
Regarding economic relations, Guo Jiakun emphasized that trade cooperation is mutually beneficial and must be an anchor for China-US relations, with dialogue, consultation, equality, and mutual respect.
In the NDS, conventional military balance remains important in strategic competition, particularly related to Taiwan and its implications for semiconductor production and the vital South China Sea route for global trade.
Going forward, the US plans to balance economic relations with China, prioritizing reciprocity, justice, and economic independence, with trade focusing on non-sensitive factors.
