Extreme Weather Threatens North Sulawesi, BMKG Asks Residents To Increase Vigilance

MANADO - The government and the public need to increase awareness of potential hydrometeorological disasters in North Sulawesi. This was emphasized by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

"BMKG has issued an appeal for extreme weather vigilance with the potential for hydrometeorological disasters," said the Daily Executor of the Head of the Sam Ratulangi Meteorological Station, Manado Margy Octavia, in Manado, as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, December 6.

Based on the analysis of atmospheric dynamics conditions, various phenomena have been observed that affect the weather in North Sulawesi, including the seeds of Tropical Cyclone 93W located in the Philippine Sea north of North Sulawesi.

This condition has an impact on the potential for increased rainfall and strong winds.

Other conditions, the dominance of the west muson wind, active La Nina, warmer sea level temperatures, and the presence of Eguatorial Rossby waves that cross the North Sulawesi region also strengthen the formation of rain clouds.

This condition, he said, is supported by wet humidity in each layer and high atmospheric lability index in the North Sulawesi region.

"The combination of this phenomenon forms atmospheric conditions that are predicted to support rain with moderate to heavy intensity accompanied by lightning and strong winds," he said.

These conditions are expected to occur in several regencies/cities in North Sulawesi, including Manado City, Bitung City, Tomohon City, Minahasa Regency, North Minahasa Regency, South Minahasa Regency, and Southeast Minahasa Regency.

In addition, Bolaang Mongondow Regency, East Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Bolaang Mongondow Regency, South Bolaang Mongondow Regency, Sitaro Islands Regency, Sangihe Islands Regency and Talaud Islands Regency.

"We urge the public, district/city governments and the Provincial Government of North Sulawesi to increase vigilance and preparedness," he said.

He hopes to coordinate with relevant agencies as an anticipatory measure for hydrometeorological disasters (water puddles, floods, landslides, and fallen trees) especially for areas with steep/mountarized/collapsed topography or prone to landslides and floods.
