JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction Yusril Ihza Mahendra said Indonesia still has to improve before becoming a full member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), especially in legal governance and eradicating corruption.

Yusril reminded that being a member of OECD requires a strong commitment to various principles of good governance or good governance.

"OECD requires high standards of integrity and transparency," said Yusril, as quoted from a statement confirmed in Jakarta, Tuesday, quoted by Antara.

Coordinating Minister Yusril said this during the Inauguration of the Management of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Islamic Economic Experts Association (IAEI) for the 2025-2030 period in Jakarta, Friday, November 28.

He alluded to the direction of government policy that is targeting Indonesia to join as a full member of OECD in the next three years.

This target is a strategic step considering that Indonesia is now in the ranks of the fifth or sixth largest economic actors in the world.

Yusril also expressed his concern about the rise of online gambling (judol) in Indonesia.

He revealed that the circulation of money from illegal practices now even exceeds the value of losses due to corruption.

"This must be our common concern. The issue of corruption, the issue of online gambling, and the issue of drugs must indeed be taken decisive steps," he said.

Previously, Chairman of the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Coalition (KAKI) Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas emphasized the importance of the role of the private sector in strengthening corporate governance as part of Indonesia's strategic steps towards OECD membership.

"If Indonesia wants to immediately become an OECD member, the private sector must have a strong anti-bribery compliance system to mitigate risks. Integrity is not only a moral obligation, but also an investment in business sustainability," said Erry in a press statement in Jakarta, Monday, October 13.

Erry, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for the 2003 '2007 period, said that the strong anti-bribery compliance system in the private sector is an important requirement so that Indonesia can immediately join the OECD.

Erry also highlighted the urgency of improving corporate governance ahead of the enactment of the new Criminal Code (KUHP) on January 2, 2026, which regulates criminal liability for corporations.
