JAKARTA - The coastal area of East Kalimantan Province (Kaltim) has the potential to experience tidal flooding on December 5-7, 2025, along with high tides.

The Coordinator for Data and Information of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Class I Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan Station, Diyan Novrida, reminded residents who live on the coast from north to south of East Kalimantan to be advised to be aware of the impact.

"We urge residents to be aware of the forecast for high tides of 2.9 meters on December 5-7," he said in Balikpapan, Tuesday, which was confiscated by Antara.

A number of coastal areas still have many active ponds, so when high tides occur, it is feared that the cultivation of residents, both shrimp, fish, and crabs in ponds, could be lost due to the impact of ocean currents.

He continued, tides can also disrupt loading and unloading activities at ports, social activities in coastal areas, and even sea water can enter residential areas near the coast, including endangering children playing on the beach.

Early warnings were also conveyed to residents in a number of other coastal areas in East Kalimantan, such as the mouth of the Mahakam River (Pulau Nubi) and its surroundings, namely the highest tide is estimated on December 6 with a height of 2.9 meters, at 19.00 WITA, the lowest recedes of 0.3 meters on December 7, at 19.00 WITA.

"Then at the mouth of the Berau River, Berau Regency, the highest tide is expected to occur on December 7 with a height of 2.9 meters at 21.00 WITA, while the low tide forecast is 0.2 meters on December 6, 2025, at 02.00 WITA," said Diyan.
