JAKARTA - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, expressed deep concern over the loss of life due to the flash floods and landslides that hit a number of areas in North Sumatra.
Puan asked the government to immediately provide assistance to residents who were victims of the disaster.
"The DPR RI expresses its concern and deep sorrow for natural disasters in a number of areas in North Sumatra. We hope that the evacuation process that the SAR team is still carrying out will run smoothly," said Puan in her statement, Wednesday, November 26.
"Every need for affected communities must be a concern of the Government. Don't be late in providing logistical assistance, and the evacuation area must ensure its comfort," he continued.
Puan also encouraged local governments (Pemda) and related stakeholders to prepare trauma healing services for residents. "Because natural disasters are never easy to pass, especially for those who have lost," he said.
In addition, Puan emphasized the importance of coordination between agencies that synergize with each other, especially during disaster management which still requires evacuation for residents. "Avoid sectoral egos, ensure the safety of the community is the most important," said Puan.
He encouraged the reconstruction of national roads and bridges that were heavily damaged, with a 'build back better' system to withstand disasters, for infrastructure management. "Immediate temporary relocation of schools and alternative logistics routes, so that the recovery of education and the economy is not delayed," said Puan.
"Once the road is cut off, schools cannot be accessed, farmers and MSMEs cannot transport the results," he added.
Puan ensured that the DPR would oversee the realization of infrastructure recovery and ensure that no community felt abandoned during the disaster.
"The state must be present when natural disasters hit, which is a moment when the people need it. The DPR will continue to oversee the disaster management process in North Sumatra to the rehabilitation that will be carried out in the future," said Puan.
