Floods Soak Residents' Houses And TNI Dormitory In Lhokseumawe, Disturbed Activities

JAKARTA - Rain with high intensity that has flushed the city of Lhokseumawe since the last few days has caused a number of residential areas and public facilities to be inundated, including the official housing complex of TNI soldiers Korem 011/Lilawangsa in Banda Sakti District. Water puddles that enter residents' homes and dormitories also hamper people's daily activities.

"We in Aceh are prone to flooding, so how do we want to help residents, while the condition of the soldier's house itself is flooded, this is PR for me," said Danrem 011/Lilawangsa Colonel Inf Ali Imran in a statement received in Banda Aceh, Sunday.

Colonel Ali Imran conveyed this when he directly observed the condition of the TNI official housing complex which was also affected by the flood. Apart from settlements, water also inundated a number of public facilities.

The affected areas include Hagu Teungoh Village, Banda Sakti District, with water levels reaching around 40 cm. Inundation is also seen on several village roads as well as the South Hagu TNI Dormitory complex, Korem 011/Lilawangsa.

He admitted that he felt the difficulties experienced by soldiers and their families. Apart from being disturbed by rest time, some of the soldiers' children were forced to sleep on chairs piled up with cloth so they wouldn't be submerged.

Based on the members' reports, some soldiers and their wives even had to stay overnight to save clothes and household items at risk of being damaged by water.

Seeing these conditions, Colonel Ali Imran ordered soldiers whose houses were submerged to immediately evacuate their families to the unit service until the situation returned to security. He stressed that family safety must be a top priority.

"If the family is safe, whatever the task is given, it can be easily completed," he said.

He also explained that high rainfall over the past week triggered flooding in a number of Aceh areas. The Lhokseumawe topography, which is a lowland and it is suspected that clogged drainage channels increase the potential for inundation when heavy rains and tidal phenomena rise.
