POLEWALI - A car belonging to Bank BNI carrying Rp 4.6 billion was burned on Jalan Trans Sulawesi, precisely in Palippis, Bala Village, Balanipa District, Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi, Wednesday 12 November.
The car with police number B 9325 PCU drove from Polewali to Mamuju, Majene Regency, to deliver money to a number of ATMs. However, the vehicle suddenly caught fire in the middle of the trip.
It is strongly suspected that the fire was caused by an electrical short in the vehicle. The fire started with one of the car cables close to the battery, then spread to the fuel and burned the entire car, including a cash safe.
Luckily, the driver and one passenger managed to survive after jumping out of the vehicle. However, all the cash worth around Rp. 4.6 billion that the car was carrying was burned.
Two fire engines from Polewali Mandar Regency were deployed to the location. Even so, the size of the fire prevented all parts of the car from being saved.
The driver of the logistics car, Surya, told of the moments when the fire broke out.
"I saw sparks, the guard said I jumped too, but I stepped aside the vehicle first. I was afraid someone was behind. The fire got bigger, I walked away and called the fire department," Surya said in his statement, Wednesday, November 12.

He said the fire started to grow about 20 minutes before firefighters arrived at the scene.
