JAKARTA - Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti said the explosion case at SMAN 72 Jakarta was an important alarm for the Ministry of Education and Culture to strengthen security and coaching systems in schools.

"This experience is an alarm for us at the ministry to strengthen three things that we have tried before this incident," he said in Jakarta, Sunday, November 9.

Mu'ti explained that the first step taken by her party was to design ministerial regulations on safe schools. This rule will regulate a learning environment that is free from violence and ensure the physical and psychological security of students.

"We want to create a learning atmosphere that is safe from all forms of violence and risky actions like what is happening now," he explained.

Mu'ti added that the Ministry of Education and Culture is changing the education paradigm towards a more humanist, comprehensive, and participatory approach. One of his efforts is to recruit non-violence ambassadors who will be specially trained to help create safe schools.

The second step is to strengthen the role of counseling teacher (BK). According to Mu'ti, all teachers, both BK and non-BK teachers, have responsibilities in student assistance. This is not adding to the burden on teachers because it is one of the main tasks of teachers is the supervisor," he said.

Mu'ti explained that teacher teaching hours will be converted into coaching hours. Teachers also act as a liaison between school and parents, helping to solve psychological, spiritual, and social issues of students.

Mu'ti highlighted that many cases of bullying in schools were triggered by unfavorable communication between schools and families. "If this communication can be improved, hopefully, cases of bullying can be minimized," she said.

He admitted that cases of violence and bullying in schools were still quite high, both the perpetrators and the victims came from students. "This is what we are handling with a more humanist, comprehensive, and participatory approach," said Mu'ti.
