JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sukamta expressed his concern over the development of the situation in Sudan which is getting worse. He hopes that the Indonesian government will be able to encourage Islamic Cooperation Organization (OKI) countries to try to stop the conflict in Sudan.
Sukamta hopes that the parties in the conflict in Sudan can exercise restraint and make a ceasefire, given that the conflict in the past two years has killed tens of thousands of civilians and 14 million in evacuation.
"The picture of the situation looks worse because of the heinous mass murder. This reminds us of the previous genocide that targeted several ethnic groups in the Darfur region in the 2003 to 2016 conflict," said Sukamta, Tuesday, November 4.
Sukamta assessed that the current situation was more difficult because of the conflict between the two mutually hostile generals. Therefore, he assessed that efforts to defuse the conflict and encourage a ceasefire need to be taken seriously so that the humanitarian tragedy in Sudan does not get worse.
"They used to ally, have balanced military forces, while in two years the conflict between the two sides continued to increase the propaganda of hatred of identity and ethnicity," said Sukamta.
The leadership of the House of Representatives Commission in charge of defense affairs and foreign relations is of the view that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia may have the greatest opportunity to put pressure on them. Because, said Sukamta, the two countries, according to several reports, have close ties to the Sudanese military and the Paramilitary group.
"In addition to the two countries, of course the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has a moral responsibility to immediately stop the conflict in Sudan. Sudan, which is predominantly Muslim, is an OIC member," explained the legislator from the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) electoral district.
Sukamta juga berharap, pemerintah Indonesia dapat mengambil peran untuk mendorong negara-negara OKI agar segera membahas konflik dan masalah kemanusiaan yang terjadi di Sudan.
"I hope the Indonesian government can encourage the OIC to immediately hold an emergency meeting to discuss efforts to stop the conflict in Sudan," concluded Sukamta.
As reported, Sudan's civil war has again been in the spotlight of the world after violence and the seizure of power between the military and paramilitary forces killed hundreds of thousands of people.
The conflict in Sudan stems from the dispute between the two generals who used to be allied, but are now fighting for control over the country that once promised the democratic transition.
The two generals are General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan from the Sudanese Armed Force (SAF) and Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo or Hemedti from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Tensions between the two generals eventually turned into a major war that destroyed the city after city.
After an 18-month siege, RSF managed to seize El-Fasher in late October 2025. The city was inhabited by about 1.2 million residents, and during the siege they lived from animal feed because no food or medicine could enter.
According to reports by Sudan Doctors Network and Al Jazeera, at least 1,500 to 2,000 people died in the days after the RSF took over the city. Verified videos show RSF forces tortured and executed civilians, as well as attacked hospitals and health facilities.

In addition, more than 26,000 people fled from the city of El Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur to the city of Tawila, while 177,000 others were still trapped in El-Fasher without access to aid.
A report from Yale Humanitarian Research Lab using satellite imagery shows signs of genocide, in the form of a large mound suspected of containing bodies and pools of blood around the city.
