GARUT - Hundreds of houses affected by the flash flood disaster in Sukalaksana Village, Banyuresmi District, Garut Regency, West Java, were caused by overflowing rivers after heavy rains flushed the Garut area.

The village head of Sukalaksana Cepi Munawar confirmed that the heavy rain that had lasted for a long time since noon caused the river flow from the hills to overflow and hit residential areas.

"There are three RWs of more than a hundred houses submerged with an average water level of one meter," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, October 30.

The flash flood that occurred this time was quite large, causing residents whose houses were affected by the flood to evacuate to a safe place.

A number of joint officers, he said, were trying to evacuate residents, as well as save valuables from the flash floods, although most of the items were not saved because the floods came quite quickly.

"Many did not have time to save valuables, because the water came so quickly and residents fled to a safe place," he said.

According to him, the flash flood flow came from the mountains of the Cibuyutan Kaler area, known as Mount Gede, which often occurs when it rains heavily.

Floods, he said, were getting worse because of the careless construction of bridges that hampered the flow of water which eventually overflowed and inundated residential areas.

"The PUPR immediately dismantled the illegal bridge, because it was not licensed and always caused flooding," he said.

Currently officers from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Disaster Preparedness Cadets, TNI, Polri, and other volunteers are helping with flood management.

The flood disaster, he said, did not cause any casualties and for other impacts such as public facilities and no matter how many houses were submerged, data collection was still being carried out.

"The number is not certain how many houses or infrastructure are affected," he said.

Banyuresmi Police Chief AKP Usep Heryaman said a number of police and TNI personnel had been deployed to help residents and also clean up garbage that clog the flow of water.

"We together with the community are doing community service to clean up trash in the Cibuyutan River so that the flow of water will run smoothly and there will be no further flooding," he said.
