Victims Of Death Of Drug Gang Eradication In Rio De Janeiro Soared To 132 People

JAKARTA - The death toll in Rio de Janeiro Brazil in the police-blooded raid operation jumped to 132 people.

The raids were carried out on drug dealers in the city on Tuesday, October 28.

"The latest update is 132 people died," said the public agency that provided legal assistance to the poor on Wednesday, October 29, reported by Al Jazeera.

The mourners gathered on Rio de Janeiro streets near the site of the operation when the bodies were laid on the road.

Rio state governor Claudio Castro said the death toll was around 60 on Wednesday, but warned the actual figure was likely higher as more bodies were taken to the morgue, where the death toll was calculated.

Favela in Rio is a poor and densely populated settlement established between the coastal hills of the city. Smoke billowing on Tuesday morning as gang groups set fire to cars to slow down armored vehicles, while gunfire was heard.

Reported by Reuters, the police released a video showing the suspects using grenade armed drones to attack the police. The footage also shows gunmen fleeing to forest areas near the site of the operation.

After the fierce fighting subsided, a Reuters journalist saw police from a special operations unit gathering dozens of shirtless men. Sobbing family members gathered outside a public hospital to treat those injured.

The Rio state government called Tuesday's operation the largest operation ever targeting the Comando Vermelho gang.

Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski said the federal government had not received a request for support from state authorities before the "bloody" operation.

Next week, Rio will host the global C40 summit of mayors discussing climate change and Prince William's Earthshot Prize, which will feature celebrities including pop star Kylie Minogue and four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel.
