JAKARTA - The United Nations Agency for Assistance and Work for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) warned that food prices in the Gaza Strip had soared to an unprecedented level due to the destruction and seizure of agricultural land by Israel.

In a statement issued Friday, UNRWA said nearly all agricultural land in the Gaza Strip had been "destroyed or inaccessible", leaving families homeless and pushing food prices to record highs after Israel's devastating two years of war.

The UN agency explained that Palestinian families who used to depend on their produce in Gaza no longer have sources of income and therefore cannot afford food, even when available in the market.

"One kilogram of tomatoes used to cost 60 cents, now it costs 15 US dollars, if any," UNRWA tweeted in an upload on X, as reported by WAFA October 17.

"Until the Gaza agricultural sector can be rebuilt, there must be an unlimited flow of aid," the agency added.

It is known that Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Israel agreed on the first phase of the ceasefire last week, in a follow-up to negotiations mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States.

In addition to ending the war, the deal also regulates the full withdrawal of Israeli troops to the opening of greater access to humanitarian aid.
