JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in parts of Indonesia on Thursday, October 16.

In the weather early warning system, BMKG predicts that the province that has the potential to experience moderate to heavy rain has the potential to occur in Aceh, Medan, Padang, Jambi.

Then, Bangka Belitung, Bandar Lampung, Banten, West Java, Denpasar, Kupang NTT, and Southwest Papua.

In addition, BMKG also announced the cause of hot weather with a maximum temperature of 37.6°C that hit various parts of Indonesia in the last few days.

This condition is caused by a combination of solar pseudo-motion and the influence of Australian Monsun. This condition is predicted to continue until the end of October or early November 2025.

BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto explained that the main cause of this hot temperature was the position of pseudo-solar movement which in October was in the south of the equator.

Another factor is the strengthening of the easterly wind or Australian Monsoon which brings dry and warm air masses so that the formation of clouds is minimal and solar radiation can reach the Earth's surface optimally.

"This position makes the central and southern parts of Indonesia, such as Java, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, and Papua, receive more intense sunlight so that the weather feels hotter in many parts of Indonesia," said Guswanto.

BMKG Director of Public Meteorology Andri Ramdhani reported that BMKG data recorded observations of the maximum temperature reaching above 35$C spread widely throughout Indonesia.

The areas most impacted by high temperatures include most of Nusa Tenggara, western to eastern Java, western and central Kalimantan, southern and southeast Sulawesi, and several parts of Papua.

In addition to persistent and dominant hot weather, BMKG predicts the potential for local rain due to convective activities can still occur in the afternoon and evening, especially in parts of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, and Papua.

Given the dynamics that occur, BMKG urges the public to maintain health by fulfilling the fluid needs and avoiding direct sun exposure for a long time, especially during the day.

"Stay alert to potential sudden weather changes such as rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in the afternoon or evening," said Andri.
