M7.6 Earthquake In Northwest Karatung Triggers Tsunami Alert Warning In North Sulawesi

MANADO - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded residents to remain calm after an earthquake occurred in northwest Karatung Island, Nanusa District, Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, at 08:43:58 WIB with a magnitude of 7.6, Friday, October 10.

"Regarding the Karatung earthquake, it is more about Mindanao, the Philippines. Even so, the BMKG issued a tsunami early warning with an alert status for the North Sulawesi region and its surroundings," said the Coordinator for Data and Information for the BMKG of the Manado Geophysics Station, Muhammad Zulkifli, quoted by ANTARA.

The location of the earthquake, he said, turned his back to the Talaud Islands Regency government center with a distance of about 287 kilometers.

Alert status, he said, if converted into tsunami height, which is below 0.5 meters.

"Even if it happens, the affected areas are Talaud Islands Regency, which is located close to the earthquake location, then North Minahasa Regency, Bitung City and Manado City," he explained.

He said the BMKG would continue to update information on tsunami early warning due to the earthquake that occurred a few hours ago.

"Residents are expected to remain calm, remain vigilant and not be influenced by irresponsible information," the price.

Residents are also invited to continue to monitor information from the BMKG, because the BMKG will continue to provide updates.

The public actually doesn't need to worry, because the earthquake is far away and the effect is on Indonesia, especially to North Sulawesi in the next few hours, that too if it happens.

"Hopefully it doesn't happen, especially since the status is alert," he said.
