Dozens of fire engines were deployed to help extinguish the fire that hit Wonogiri City Market, Central Java, which occurred on Monday, October 6 in the early hours of the morning.

Wonogiri Resort Police Chief AKBP Wahyu Sulistyo said the fire engines deployed to extinguish the fire did not only come from the Wonogiri Regency Government, but also the surrounding districts/cities.

According to him, the fire incident that occurred at around 03.00 WIB began with a report from market security officers.

"The market security guard smelled a burning smell around the second floor of the market," Wahyu said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday morning.

He said the fire spread quite quickly to other parts of the market. The fire that burned the market was extinguished at around 09.00 WIB.

"Joint officers are still cooling down the fire site," he added.

Wahyu said there were no fatalities in the unfortunate incident. The number of burning Wonogiri Market kiosks and stalls is estimated to reach around 300 units on the 1st and 2nd floors.

He said the cause of the initial fire was thought to have started with a short circuit in the light at one of the kiosks.
