JAKARTA - Two people died after a perpetrator crashed his car into a pedestrian and stabbed a security officer near a sinagoge in England on the day of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

Manchester Raya Police said officers shot the suspect after being called to the scene of the incident in Sinagoge, the Hebrew Congregation of Heaton Park in the Crumpsall district, the city, in northern England.

Police acted after an eyewitness said the car hit a resident and a man was stabbed. The suspect is believed to have died.

In addition to the two people who have been confirmed dead, three others are in serious condition.

After the attack, police were seen escorting a large group of mostly Jewish elderly men, some were crying, many looked shocked. Some wore white cloaks, others wearing suit and skullcap.

"I was very surprised by the attack on the sinagoge in Crumpsall," Prime Minister Keir Starmer said as he rushed home from a European political meeting in Copenhagen to return to England to lead an emergency meeting.

"The fact that this happened to Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it even more terrible," said Starmer.

Videos shared on social media and verified by Reuters showed police shooting a man inside the sinagoge perimeter.

While another man lying on the floor covered in blood, was seen wearing a traditional Jewish head covering.

"We are grateful to the public who are responsive to what they witnessed so as to allow us to act quickly, and as a result, the perpetrators are prevented from entering the sinagoge," said a police spokesman.

"We know today's horrific attack, on the holiest day of the Jewish community, will cause significant shocks and fears across our community," he said.
