JAKARTA - German police arrested a Syrian man suspected of committing crimes against humanity, including murder and torture, as a militia leader in 2011 in Aleppo.
A Syrian citizen who was only identified as Anwar S. in accordance with German privacy laws, is suspected of being the head of the "Sabiha military" stationed in Aleppo on behalf of the former Syrian leader under then President Bashar al-Assad.
Prosecutors said in eight times between April and November 2011 after Friday prayers, suspects and their militias hit civilians with batons, iron pipes, and other tools to break up the protests.
"The electric shock is also believed to have been used," the prosecutor continued in a statement reported by Reuters, Monday, September 30.
Several protesters were handed over to police and intelligence authorities and, while detained, suffered severe abuse, prosecutors said, citing that in one case, a protester died.
