JAKARTA - The Provincial Government of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has prepared as many as 200 thousand plant seeds to rehabilitate the critical hill area in Doro O'o Village, Langgudu District, Bima Regency.

"If we don't fix these hills, problems will come again and we will continue to spend money just to repair bridges and roads," said NTB Governor Lalu Muhamad Iqbal in a statement in Mataram, Monday, confiscated by Antara.

Iqbal revealed that the condition of the minimal vegetation of Doro O'o's evidence had caused a flood that damaged the bridge, thus disrupting the economy of the local population.

According to him, hill reforestation is a strategic step to prevent erosion and sedimentation that often damages residents' main connecting bridges.

"We will help 200 thousand seeds starting from kemiri, avocado, and other hard plants. On the sidelines, porang can be planted so that people can reap results in the near future," said Iqbal.

He explained that the damage to the Doro O'o bridge was caused by sedimentation of mud and erosion in the surrounding hills that had lost vegetation cover. Improvement of infrastructure must be accompanied by environmental restoration through a sustainable and community-based reforestation program.

A total of 200 thousand hard plant seeds will be distributed to the community around the hill. Types of kemiri and avocado plants were chosen because they have strong roots that are able to repair soil structures and increase water absorption.

On the sidelines of the reforestation area, the community is also asked to plant porang to obtain faster economic results. The agrophorestry approach is expected to encourage active citizen participation and maintain a balance between environmental conservation and the economic welfare of rural communities.

The NTB Provincial Government bears the provision of seeds and technical assistance, while the community together with the village government are responsible for planting and maintaining.

"The impact is already tough, so it must start immediately. We provide the seeds, people who help grow," concluded Iqbal.

Acting Head of the NTB Environment and Forestry Service (DLHK) Ahmadi stated that the government continues to intensify the tree planting movement, especially productive plants with economic value.
