JAKARTA - Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in New York to attend the UN General Assembly, which is the first participation of a Syrian president since 1967.
Sharaa a former al-Qaeda leader who was once valued at $10 million for his head won a major diplomatic victory in May when he received recognition from US President Donald Trump at a meeting in Riyadh.
The US then lifted most of the sanctions against Syria. The Trump administration has expressed its support for Sharaaa's efforts to unite and stabilize the country.
Reported by Reuters on Monday, September 22, Sharaa is expected to deliver her first speech at the General Assembly, which will open her 80th hearing on Tuesday.
