Even Though Tanah Abang is Crowded, Anies Called Jakarta's Economy Not Yet Normal

JAKARTA - In recent times, several shopping places such as Tanah Abang Market are crowded with people who buy necessities in celebration of Eid al-Fitr this year.

"I think if you look at the crowds of the market ahead of Eid al-Fitr it is quite crowded compared to the pre-pandemic period", said Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan at his residence in the South Jakarta area, Thursday, May 13.

Anies thinks the crowds in the market are caused by many traders who do not homecoming. Thus, they choose to keep selling.

"Maybe it's because the traders don't homecoming, the shopper doesn't homecoming either, so the market is more crowded. I appreciate the traders who choose to remain in Jakarta", said Anies.

However, Anies said the economy in Jakarta has not returned to its original state. Because, many people buy in retail, not buy in large quantities for resale.

"If we pay attention to why Tanah Abang Market is crowded, yesterday I noticed that the coming retail buyers. Even though the market is wholesale", said Anies.

In fact, said Anies, usually residents buy goods in Tanah Abang in large quantities and bring home goods purchased with large bags. When asked, the reason they buy retail in Tanah Abang is that the price is cheaper.

"Now that is happening, they cut directly to Tanah Abang because the price is cheaper. That is, with more limited money, they are more selective in choosing locations to shop in Tanah Abang Market", explained Anies.

However, the former Minister of Education and Culture hopes that this year's Eid al-Fitr momentum can gradually boost people's purchasing power during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Hopefully the effect will be greater because the money will rotate more in Jakarta. But whether it can come back positive, we will see the numbers", he concluded.
