JAKARTA - The Australian Government's Special Envoy to fight Islamophobia, Aftab Malik, released a report that Australia has failed to contain persistent and more intensive Islamophobia.

He called anti-Muslim hatred a "rooted social challenge" in his country.

Malik said that based on the results of a year-long investigation, it was found that Islamophobic-related incidents had soared in recent years in Australia.

"The reality is that in Australia it keeps happening, sometimes it is ignored and sometimes denied, but has never been fully handled," he told a news conference in Sydney, Friday, September 12, quoted by AFP.

He said his party had compiled 54 recommendations for reports to be submitted to Perlemen and the Australian Government as powerful measures and ensured mitigation of Islamophobic hate speech and greater support for the victims.

"Islamophobia is not only interpersonal, but also institutional and structural," added Malik.

The report also calls for an independent review of Australia's anti-terrorism laws as well as an investigation into the causes and solutions of anti-Palestinian racism.

"From the heinous graffiti full of hatred, vandalism of Muslim property, and verbal abuse, as well as physical violence against Muslim bodies, Islamophobia is part of the daily life of the Muslim community in Australia," the report said.

Malik, who was appointed last year as the Australian Government's Special Envoy to fight Islamophobia, said threats to the Muslim community in Australia were evident in sight.

He then shared experiences related to the Muslim family case in Australia that was approached by foreigners on the train. The foreigner said: "It would be great to kill them all".

"This is a moment where we decide who we are as a country and whether we are ready to take the necessary steps to ensure that everyone in Australia, regardless of belief, ethnicity, or background, is safe, respected, and treated with dignity," Malik said.
