BANDA ACEH – A young man with the initials AW (25) from Bireuen tried his luck in an absurd way: breaking into his own friend's ATM. He allegedly used the money from the "instant technology" to buy a motorbike and gamble online. Unfortunately, instead of making a profit, AW was arrested by the Banda Aceh Police.
"Last night we arrested AW (25), a Bireuen resident, in a hut next to his house," said Head of Criminal Investigation at the Banda Aceh Police, AKP Donna Briadi, in Banda Aceh, as reported by ANTARA on Saturday, August 30.
AKP Donna explained that the victim of the ATM theft by his friend was Ikhsan (24), a resident of Krueng Barona Jaya, Aceh Besar Regency.
He explained that the victim first realized his ATM had been hacked when he tried to withdraw money from one of the Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) ATM galleries in Lampineung, Banda Aceh, on Sunday (August 1, 2025).
After seeing his balance significantly reduced, he immediately filed a report with the Banda Aceh Police. An investigation led to the identification of the perpetrator after checking CCTV footage at several ATM booths. He was subsequently arrested.
AKP Donna explained that the victim was friends with the perpetrator. He also learned the victim's ATM password because he had watched her create her PIN.
The perpetrator then stole an ATM card stored at the victim's home in July 2025 and went directly to several BSI ATM booths in Banda Aceh to withdraw various amounts, totaling IDR 94 million.
Donna explained that the suspect used the proceeds from the ATM burglaries to purchase a CBR 250cc motorcycle for IDR 45 million, and spent the rest on online slot gambling.
"The amount of deposits he made was astronomical, including IDR 10 million several times, and IDR 5 million several times," she said.
The perpetrator has been taken by the Jatanras Operations Team to the Banda Aceh Police Headquarters to be held accountable for his actions.
On this occasion, AKP Donna urged the public to keep their ATM PINs confidential as best as possible. Sharing your PIN with others is very risky and could even lead to data theft.
"Every time you enter your PIN, cover it with your hand for added security. Don't expose it too much," AKP Donna concluded.
