KPK Detention Center Excess Capacity: 1 Cell No Longer For Three

JAKARTA - Acting Deputy for Enforcement and Execution of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Asep Guntur Rahayu revealed that the detainees at the KPK detention center branch of the Red and White Building and C1 were overcapacity. The room, which previously contained three suspects, is now occupied by four suspects.

"There was a division that previously included one room for three, yes, we added one arrangement," Asep told reporters quoted on Friday, August 29.

In addition, prisoners also occupy isolation rooms that should be used for new suspects. This condition, Asep said, is a short-term solution.

"But of course we also see the human side. That is, we measure that this room is suitable for or maximally for how many people," he said.

As for the long-term solution, the anti-corruption commission plans to cooperate with other institutions that have detention centers.

Meanwhile, KPK spokesman Budi Prasetyo stated that currently there are 57 detainees in the anti-corruption commission detention center. This condition exceeds capacity, because the two detention centers are actually only for 51 detainees.

Despite being overcapacity, Budi said, the management of detention centers is still in accordance with standards. Prisoners' rights remain a priority for the anti-corruption commission.

"We make sure that the management remains in accordance with the provisions and protects the basic rights of detainees," said Budi in a written statement.

In addition, the facilities inside the detention center are also a concern of the KPK. "At the KPK Detention Center, there are also areas and tools for sports and medical examinations by doctors," said Budi.

"This is to keep the prisoners in good health and fit so that they can follow the legal process properly," he concluded.
